11 Ways to Approach Holiday Stress

By Liz Sterling

The holidays in South Florida pose a real dichotomy for many people – the ultimate love/hate relationship of internal angst and outward celebration. Welcome to December and another season of shopping, traffic, overeating, overspending, complaining, worrying, planning, houseguests, germs from up north, crowds and yes, of course, more traffic. On the flip side, we look forward to meeting new people at great side conversations at the table, shared wisdom, hope for the future, family gatherings, parties, new outfits and the potential for the holiday spirit to take up residence in our homes and hearts.

Although there is no actual revolution, as in Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities,” the opening paragraph to his book begs to be on this page as a reflection of the inner battle we wage throughout our lives and especially when the holidays approach. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Wherever you are in mind, heart and spirit this holiday season, as the days get shorter and the nights longer, it’s good to know that it’s healthy to carry awareness of all the stresses that bubble up throughout this month – the ones that often magically disappear with the pop of the cork at the stroke of midnight 2019.

Let’s identify those stresses now, so we can be on the lookout for them and mitigate the damage ASAP. What are your biggest challenges throughout the season? If you are way cool and cruise through the month, fantabulous!!! You win the peace prize. Not only that, you also are sharing your gentle nature as you go out and about in the world. Bring the best of you to others and help them to feel what cool, calm and collected looks like. This is your gift to share and to help uplift. What a joy!

For those who know there will be stresses, once they are identified, you can be on the lookout for them when they pop up. My biggest issue is traffic as you probably deduced. I’ve decided to leave extra travel time this year, at least 10 minutes more than usual, so I can stay calm when the storm in my head becomes a blizzard of road rage. I’ve already has success with this go-to tool, and feel great about creating “extra time” for myself.

I teach a Women’s Wisdom Circle every week at the Levis JCC Sandler Center in Boca Raton. Approximately 30-plus women gather around a large table and we share our collective wisdom. This meeting is open to the public and, yes, you can contact me for further information. I’d love to meet you!!! We share ideas for learning how to shift our perspective so we can have more of the best of times in our lives. Last week, I asked the group to help me devise a list of stress busters for the holidays as part of this article, and I love what they offered.

Here’s The Wisdom Circle’s Wisdom:

• Let the Past Be the Past – Reflect on Happy Times You’ve Had and Ones to Come

• If You Host – Delegate, Prepare in Advance and Enjoy the Party

• Create an Intention for a Great Outcome

• Have Patience

• Imbibe the Food you Prepare with LOVE

• Center Yourself – Get Grounded – Bring Your Best Self!

• Cultivate Gratitude

• Care for Your Body and Soul – Exercise, Meditate, Rest and Reflect

• Use Humor

• Ask Yourself, “Would I Rather Be Right or Happy?”

• Rather Than Positing Your Position – Practice Being Neutral on the stormy topics of the day.

Bear in mind that we have internal chatter that is an ongoing dialogue – every day, it’s the best of times and the worst of times. The more awareness you shine on the way you look and think – the more you’ll be aware of the thrust of your thoughts and the more opportunities you will have to seize the day.

I invite you to share this message with everyone you know, to see with new eyes this season, to look within and to choose to make this truly a season of light. Then we’ll establish a strong foundation for the spring of hope!

Happy Holidays – Happy New You and Happy New Year 2019!
