reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as
how we have lived. -Anon. . . By Julie Johnson Olson, San Rafael, California One day, while driving home, I was about to
turn a corner when I saw a little sparrow hopping on the road. I stopped my car in midturn, put on my blinkers
because this was a busy Iowa City street, and opened the door. The little bird hopped up to my door, looked at me, and then
skittered under the car. I got out and spoke to him soothingly. The sparrow seemed content listening to me talk to him.
My husband, Paul, usually keeps a clean towel in the trunk that he uses to wipe the car down after a wash. I found the towel
and coaxed the bird into it, then gently wrapped the cloth around his little body. He barely moved, and for a minute, I thought he?d
died. Then he fluttered a little, as if to say, ?I?m okay; I?m here.? But he couldn?t fly at all.
I drove to a vet clinic. They suggested that I take the bird to the humane society/animal shelter just a mile away. So I put
the sparrow back into the car, and we drove there. The director of this animal shelter greeted me at
the door with so much love that I knew I?d come to the right place. It concerned me that my little
buddy hadn?t moved since we arrived at the shelter. As we entered the office area, two parakeets greeted us. The little
sparrow fluttered wildly under the towel as if he wanted to see who was saying hello to him. The director took the injured
animal out of the towel and stroked his head. She put him outside where he could fly away if he felt up to it. She also gave
my little friend some birdseed. She tried to reassure me by saying, ?Sometimes birds hit a window and are stunned.?
While the director was trying to help the sparrow, I started to come to an interesting interpretation of
ANGEL ANIMALS A Sparrow Changed my Life . this situation. I love animals. They?re a big part of my life.
Because of this sparrow, I was now at a place where I could help animals. Volunteering would be a new way of serving life. I?d been
thinking about doing this for a while. So, then and there, I signed up to volunteer to help with the
dogs in the shelter?s care. The application said ?referred by? and I wrote ?an injured bird.?
Right away I started helping people with their dogs. One family came to the shelter to adopt a puppy. They brought their two
other dogs to get them acquainted first. To see these humans and animals meeting each other was like witnessing a happy reunion.
It was very gratifying to watch the new family form. Then we all noticed the tame little sparrow hopping over to get
a better look at this loving scene, as if he were drawn to all the joy. But he still couldn?t fly. The
director came out and scooped him up gently. She said that she?d send him to a man who rehabilitates birds.
The sparrow was on his way to the next phase of his life. And, thanks to meeting him, so was I. Meditation
