. Entertainment Calendar July Mikhail Gorbachev: On a Peace Mission With the fighting in Iraq and the war on terror, it is always
nice to hear a fresh voice from a different period in our history talk about peace. ?Peace in the 21 st Century? was
the topic of a speech given by former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev recently at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
He is on a peace mission and is spreading his word through speeches like this. His concern for the environment and third
world nations seems genuine. His message seems not so different than that of Al Gore. Not only is he a world political figure, but
he is also a Nobel peace prize winner. The 77 year old, aided by an interpreter, spoke a little bit about his
background. He has been in politics for 55 years. He is a law school graduate, but only practiced law for 7 days. He came from a
peasant family and joined the communist party in high school. Before being called to Moscow to become part of the Soviet
government, he was the equivalent of a governor of a province for 10 years. While working in the provinces, Gorbachev says
that he ?learned to conduct dialogue with people.? He was married to his wife Raisa, who died in 1999 and has one daughter,
Irina, and two granddaughters. Aside from the politics, he seems like an average grandfather that you would meet. He was actually quite likeable and
has a good sense of humor. President Gorbachev thinks that the greatest challenges of the 21st century are the ?environment, backwardness, and poverty.? He calls
for a ?global glasnost.? ?Glasnost? is a term that was coined during his presidency, that means openness between countries to bring about

working with President Reagan toward a reduction of nuclear weapons in the 1980?s. Not only does he call for a reduction in nuclear weapons,
he also calls for a reduction in conventional weapons. The ?food crisis? is a problem that needs to be
addressed. ?We should be teaching other countries to help themselves.? ?We do not need to give them the fish,
but the means to fish.? In this global world, international cooperation needs to be organized. It must be
based on international law, he said. One of Gorbachev?s greatest accomplishments during his presidency, was signing the 1992
disarmament agreement with Ronald Reagan. He received a Nobel peace prize in 1990 for contributing to
reduce East-West tensions. He moved the Soviet Union towards a more democratic nation and worked towards the downfall of communism.
Today, Gorbachev seems sincere when he speaks of peace and his main concern, the environment. He has started
an organization called ?Green Cross International.? The mission of the organization is to help ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by
fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity?s relationship with nature. Gorbachev
has also written a book about Perestroika. This was another term that was coined during his presidency, and means ?economic restructuring.? This
is a controversial topic that he discusses in greater depth in his book. A picture released by the European Union newsroom shows former Soviet
leader Mikhail Gorbachev receiving a Special Award for ?his tireless engagement on behalf of the environment through his Green Cross
Foundation on May 26, 2008 in Brussels. The award was presented to Mikhail Gorbachev and his ?Green Cross Foundation? at the ?Energy
Globe Awards? gala held at the European Parliament in Brussels. Michael Bolton July 15 8:00pm Hard Rock Live
