Secret in session yesterday, and mentioned that the video helped her become enlightened. That expression of hers
inspired me to write about Enlightenment. The term, as I?ll speak about it in this column, is much more than the Enlightenment that the great
French philosophers Rousseau and Voltaire wrote about in the so-called Age of Enlightenment that helped usher in an idealism and egalitarianism
that inspired the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. These two documents helped further inspire a more
enlightened way of looking at government throughout the world for decades and centuries to come. They still do.
The Enlightenment that I?ll speak about in this column is also more than the understanding of the Law of Attraction and Creative Thought
that?s become so popular with the best-selling The Secret. It?s the realization of living truths that were recorded millennia ago.
The Enlightenment that I?ll speak about in this column is more than the Cosmic Consciousness flashes depicted in the revolutionary
book, Cosmic Consciousness, written a century ago by the Canadian psychiatrist R.M. Bucke. In this seminal classic, a desert island read
for me if I was limited to even just a handful of books, the therapist voluminously categorized the mystical gleanings of great seers, sages,
philosophers, poets, and the like throughout history. The book is so important in the study of consciousness because the spiritual
experiences that it elucidates are given greater importance than the ritual performances that take place a couple of hours every weekend in
America. There?s a world of difference between ritual and spiritual. As important as all these different glimpses are, of Enlightenment
is actually much, much more. Enlightenment isn?t a tasty appetizer, the way Bucke depicted it, but a five-course meal. You may visit Paris
as a tourist for a vacation: a Parisian on the other hand, is French. You glimpse France, he lives it. It?s only fitting in this age of 24/7 that
Enlightenment becomes widely known as the all time 24/7 state that it is, rather than an occasional glimpse or fleeting experience that it isn?t.
One more thing: Enlightenment isn?t some weird, vague state of being, but the most grounded, natural and comfortable way to go about the
joy of living each and every day. So it is with Enlightenment, that a perpetual condition of transformed consciousness as much as it is of purified physiology.
Because it takes the transformation of the nervous system to consciously reflect all the time, the timelessness of the Transcendent that?s your
essential nature, the ground of your inner Being, your higher Self. Meditation is a marvelous method for awakening this state that
doesn?t go away. That?s because it gives regular glimpses of this Samadhi, this Transcendental Consciousness and then it goes away.
But the regular alternation of this glimpse into the fourth state of consciousness alongside the ever changing three states of waking,
dreaming, and sleeping, in time, creates a fifth state of consciousness that never goes away. Whether you?re filling out tax forms, having
some Dali-like surrealistic dream, or are in deep sleep, the light of your inner Self will always be lit. Maybe that?s why the term Enlightenment
is truly appropriate. Happily Overheard ?A real leader faces the music, even when he doesn?t like the tune.? -Anon.
