Start the New Year NOW

By Dana Gore

Since it’s December, I would imagine that New Year’s resolutions may be on your mind. It’s possible that this was the case last year, the year before and the year before that.

In fact, this pattern may even travel as far back as Woodstock (the real one).

So if this is the case for you, how does this make you feel? Are you ready for another round of this insanity? Or are you looking for a way to finally be rid of this task once and for all?

If it happens to be the latter, you’re in luck. I have a few ideas here that may help you to finally free yourself of the dreaded self-inflicted day of punishment…otherwise known as January 1st.

Tip #1 – Don’t wait to exercise. It doesn’t have to be complicated. All you need to do is move. Walking, swimming, sports and dancing are all acceptable ways to get moving. If hiring a well-qualified trainer is something you want to do, a benefit to acting quickly would be that they would most likely have more flexibility NOW as opposed to when their schedule fills up with everyone else who waited (unlike you).

Tip #2 – Practice sound nutrition today instead of waiting. Knowing there will be plenty of festivities going on, the last thing you want to do is to feel as though you have to do a complete 180 degree shift in your eating habits come next month. An easy way to go about this is to indulge (yes, I meant indulge) in your favorite vegetables as often as you can – and consider adding a new one to the mix every week. So if you’ve always wondered if spaghetti squash really is all it’s cracked up to be, then make it a point to find out for yourself this month.

Tip #3 – Make a list of all of your attempts to incorporate well-being into your life this past year and be aware of what worked and what didn’t. Awareness is our friend – and when it comes to wanting to make any lasting changes – it’s best to "know thyself".

It’s my hope for all of you that healthy living becomes a normal way of life. Even if you take things one step at a time – they all add up.

Happy Holidays!
