Sofia Vergara

By Liz Sterling

One thing any transplanted Floridian knows, September is Hot, Hot, Hot!

As the country begins cooling down, our peninsula is still heating up. It won’t be until mid October that we see the humidity break and the northern breeze come upon us. So as long as we are talking about hot, hot hot, we might as well feature the hottest woman around these days, Sofia Vergara.

Although I am not an avid television watcher, I have caught a few episodes of Modern Family for which Sofia stars on the ABC series as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett. She has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2012 and 2013, she was the top-earning actress on US television. In 2014, she was ranked as the 32nd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes. Just last month at the 66th Emmy Awards, Modern Family won for best comedy series for the fifth year in a row. The series has now tied Frasier for a record five consecutive wins being recognized as an outstanding accomplishment. In a move to represent diversity and humor, Sofia used her beautiful assets to add light and humor to the Emmys. She was placed on a rotating platform while Bruce Rosenblum, the chief executive of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences, delivered a speech about diversity.

After she introduced him, Rosenblum said to Vergara, “This has been a terrific year for American television and our shows continue to have a meaningful impact around the world. To demonstrate, we’d love for you to stand on this revolving platform.”

Vergara: “That seems a bit unnecessary, but if that’s how they do it in American television, okay.”

Rosenblum concluded his speech by saying “What truly matters is that we never forget that our success is based on always giving the viewer something compelling to watch.” And it’s easy to watch Sofia. I recently saw her in the 2014 movie Chef and she was the consummate actress who was engaging and utterly gorgeous. So for some, that’s what you do, you show up and flaunt what you have, especially when you’ve held a vision all your life to come to America and make your dreams come true. For others, in this, 2014, there are less exploitive ways to show up and show off. To each her own… Sofia Margarita Vergara was born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her mother, Margarita, is a housewife. Her father, Julio, provides cattle to the meat industry. She has five siblings. She was educated at a private bilingual Spanish/English school. She then went on to study pre-Dentistry at Colombia University. However, Sofia was discovered by a photographer at the beach and this led to various jobs in modeling and television. At age 23, she was a runway model. Vergara was widely known for co-hosting two television shows for Spanish-language television network Univisión in the late 1990s which gave her exposure in the United States.

"The hottest woman around these days!"

She has appeared in two Tyler Perry films:

Meet the Browns and Madea Goes to Jail , receiving an ALMA Award nomination for the latter.

Vergara’s success on television has earned her roles in recent films The Smurfs (2011), New Year’s Eve (2011), Happy Feet Two (2011), The Three Stooges (2012), Escape From Planet Earth (2013), and Machete Kills (2013) and most recently in Chef (2014).

Sofia Vergara is the only Hispanic actress who started her career in a U.S. Hispanic Network and successfully crossed over to the general market. The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard have also named her one of the most talented and powerful women in Hispanic entertainment.

And on a personal note, Sofia has recently been in a hot-and-heavy, attached-at-the-hip relationship with actor Joe Manganiello of HBO’s True Blood. Her boyfriend, of just over two months, is also hot, hot, hot and when you put it all together, there’s a lot to watch!

So let’s keep our cool this month as we seek to discover and enjoy the true beauty that’s right here in hot, hot, hot Florida, and most importantly, the beauty that is inherent within.
