In 2015, the vernal equinox

By Kim Hough

(which is also called the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere)

The spring equinox is the time in Earth’s annual cycle around the Sun in which day and night are equal in length, before the days finally start to get longer after the dominance of darkness during winter, and life springs forth from death. Spring equinox is celebrated as the first day of spring, when day and night are equal in both hemispheres. All of nature is stirring now and showing signs of activity after the winter sleep.

Buds are bursting on the trees, spring flowers are coming out and seeds are germinating. With spring we balance the inner and outer lives as we observe the projection of our inner consciousness (inner space) reflected in our daily lives (outer space). All major religious traditions celebrate with holidays at this time of the year. We are reminded to connect with the essence of who we are – spiritual beings undergoing the human experience. It is an awesome time to do some internal spring cleaning, a time to take an honest look at your life, and what you are creating each day. Similar to spring cleaning our closets, it’s a time to take an inventory of our lives, what needs to be tossed away, and what to hold on to.

Through honest and intentional choices, we can see what’s missing, what’s been tossed to the side, and what is holding us back from creating something wonderful.

What wisdom are you bringing with you from the dark of winter?

What are you awakening in yourself? What do you want to encourage and give your attention to so that it has the best chance of manifestation?

What do you need to let go of, clutter clear, or spring clean to create space for realizing your dreams?

How can you be proactive to help the Earth?

Spring equinox is just a day, of course, but it represents a new start. It is a reminder to check in with our true selves. I use my yoga practice as a guide to bring myself back to center and to reflect on what I am sending my energy to. Through my daily practice I choose one clear intention. The intention could be as simple as a w o r d : “ c l a r i t y ” , “ p e a c e ” , “compassion”, or it could be more detailed, like visualizing your dreams. Choose what you want to put into the world… what you want to get back. Once you choose to let go of what is not serving you, you choose to move forward with clarity, kindness, faith and trust. Spring intentions work like magic seeds that get planted in fertile soil!
