Moment-ohm

By Jonna Shutowick. M.S. Ed.

It walk the dog every morning before work. Lately she’s been waking up early which, at first, had me grumpily rolling out of bed, sliding on my slippers, and taking her out with eyes half open. All I could think about was how dark it was, and the fact that I had graduated from dealing with babies at crazy hours nearly two decades ago. But as the days and weeks went by I began to notice that dawn was coming earlier each day. I found myself outside at some of the most beautiful moments of the day. Sounds, colors, creatures and an indescribable peace came over me, and I realized that missing this daily ritual was something I was no longer willing to do. Sure, I love my pillow, but it’s not going anywhere. I can always nap later! I enjoy this time of morning so much that now, watching the sunrise has become an integral part of my life with or without the dog!

It’s funny the things we notice when we tune in. First of all, right at the edge of the park in my neighborhood there is a bench facing east and situated at the end of the lake, providing a perfect view of the sunrise coming up over the lake. This bench has been right outside my house the entire 14 years we’ve lived here and I’ve never given it a second thought. Now I find myself wondering if the person who designed the park also enjoy watching the sunrise? Or did he or she read in a trade magazine that putting a bench there would be a good idea? Either way it doesn’t matter. The point is that bench is there... for me... every morning serving an amazing purpose in my life and I am grateful. I stop there every day and honor a very important moment in my life that very moment. I go to the bench, let the dog off the leash, sit on the bench and just let go of everything. Breathing in and breathing out... listening to the birds, the frogs, the crickets... breathing in and out... I look at the changing colors of the sky and imagine immersing myself in the love that is available out in the universe... breathing in and breathing out... I realize that there is nothing more precious than that moment. In those moments on that bench each morning, the whole world seems to be standing still. I thought about how I could carry this peace with me all day, and found myself thinking: "just take a moment from time to time during the day... take a moment... take... a moment." It sounds so simple, but what does it really mean to take a moment? I looked up the etymology of the word moment. It is a variation of the Latin word for momentum. Momentum, we all know, has to do with movement and energy expenditure. So, taking a moment literally means stopping the momentum. Being still. That bench is there so that people can stop the momentum of their lives and reflect, or just be. It is even at the edge of the lake, so reflection might be another thing the designer of the park in my neighborhood had in mind. I would really love to have a discussion with that person. Whether they know it or not, they are a Zen master and I am grateful.
