How can I live alone, and not be lonely?

By Liz Sterling

Your feelings may not be solely related to living alone. When we let the business of the world fall away, we all meet that deeper place inside that tends to feel alone.

Dag Hammarskjöld said, ”Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for.”

As you reflect on the choices you have made and the roles you have played, you may find this is a turning point for a newly passionate self to emerge. More meaningful living requires an excavation of your beliefs, values and passions.

This time in your life can become an opportunity to ask for what you want and need from others, and to create healthy relationships with yourself, your family and your friends. Discover what makes you feel valuable and use that to make your days matter.

Are you willing to journey into the realm of self-knowledge? If so, explore classes on personal growth, spirituality and wellness. Check out Meetup gatherings and other programs and people who will stimulate you to open new doors of perception.

Venture into the unknown and be spontaneous. In the interim, keep a gratitude journal and each evening before you go to bed, write down three things you feel grateful for. This practice tends to restore vitality and appreciation.
