Do I Need Special Tires For My Electric Vehicle?

By Teresa Aquila

The answer is yes. Electric Vehicles require the correct tire to handle the extra weight and torque they provide. With an average EV sedan weighing around 5,000 pounds, a thousand pounds more than a gasoline-powered vehicle, Electric Vehicles produce significant amount of instant torque when you apply the accelerator. The tires have tread that is designed for acceleration and high-speed cornering for many of the Performance models.

This instant response is harder on tires. When purchasing tires for your EV, make sure you are getting energy efficient-style tires. Tires with sound-deadening capability won’t improve range or performance, but you might want them, because one of the best things about the electric car driving experience is the calm and quiet.

You will need to purchase tires more frequently, and they’ll cost around $1,000 for a set of four, but like everything, there is a trade off when switching from a combustion engine vehicle to an electric-powered vehicle. Do your homework before purchasing an EV. Happy Motoring.
