Have you ever wondered how long original equipment manufacturer (OEM parts) will be available, once a vehicle manufacturer stops producing a certain model?
There is no set law mandating the length of time OEM parts will be sold, but the rule of thumb is between 8-15 years. Many aftermarket companies manufacture many engines and body parts, but it all depends on how successful the vehicle was.
One way to judge if your vehicle’s parts will be on the market is to check and see the total number of vehicles sold of your year, make and model. You can bet a popular model will keep the manufacturer producing parts to keep up with the demand. How long it will depends on several factors.
Call your dealer and check to see if they plan on keeping inventory. Some manufacturers, like Mercedes-Benz, have programs to reissue parts on demand for their classic car lines, though these parts can be expensive. The downside is that special parts such as clips, plastics components, and brackets will be harder to find then other common parts.
