Women, Driving Change

By Teresa Aquila

The automotive industry is driving change. Women are stepping up and taking on a career that in the past was dominated mostly by men. Women matter in the industry not just for diversity, but innovation, growth, and meeting demand of a changing world.

When automobiles were first introduced, women were inventors, but were forbidden to hold patents for their designs. Like Mary Anderson, who invented windshield wipers, but never obtained the credit for the design.

Not so today. Women make up 24% of automotive manufacturing roles, though only 16% are executive positions. With the birth of electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and sustainability transforming the automotive landscape, women are now stepping into roles that are driving the industry forward.

I personally was told at a young age that taking on a career in mechanics was unheard of for women. I was instructed to find a career as a secretary or nurse - neither was in my dreams for the future. I set out and am determined to fulfil my future as a mechanic.

Women make up 80% of all car purchasing decisions, but their talent in design and marketing have been historically overlooked. So ladies, if you are looking for a career change, or young and focusing on a career, try the automotive world, engineering, welding, production, mechanics, body repair, and so much more.

I wrote a book, "Life Inside the Boys Club." My one advice to me, was," "I am not here to prove myself, only improve myself." It was never about a movement; it was about me and my journey. Find yours. Happy Motoring.
