My friend has just become a vegetarian. Is this a spiritual thing?

ASK LIZ Make life Matter Now

My friend has just become a vegetarian. Is this a spiritual thing?

L.T., Delray Beach

Vegetarianism is practiced for numerous reasons including health, ecological, dislike of meat, compassion for animals, belief in nonviolence, and economics. There are those who choose vegetarianism for spiritual reasons that are unrelated to religion.

As we become more aware, we recognize the interconnectedness of all life. Hence, as we treat others with reverence, we gain more respect for ourselves.

John Robbins, the only son of the founder of the Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire, chose to walk away from the family business and pursue a vegetarian lifestyle, addressing the environmental concerns, animal cruelty and health issues that are plaguing humanity.

In his book, “Diet for a New America,” he states his intent to “...pursue the deeper American Dream... of a society at peace with its conscience because it respects and lives in harmony with all life forms.”

Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish and poultry. Vegans are vegetarians who abstain from eating or using all animal products, including milk, cheese, other dairy items, eggs, wool, silk and leather. Many people become vegetarian instantly. They totally give up meat, fish and poultry overnight. Others make the change gradually.

Ask your friend why she chose vegetarianism. I am sure she will have a thoughtful response. Some people start by learning more about the Meatless Monday Global Movement (www. MeatlessMonday.com) or watching “Forks Over Knives” on Netflix. Here’s to your health!
