For Whom the Bells Toll

By Cary Bayer
An Associated Press-GfK poll conducted in 2011 found that 77 percent of American adults believe in the existence of angels. What’s more, a whopping 55 percent of people in our country say that they’ve been helped by their guardian angel.

My encounter with angels was more subtle: I didn’t have an angel save my life, avoid a car accident, or steer clear of another looming calamity. And I myself didn’t see any angels either, as my experience was not of the visual variety but of the auditory kind.

I was a senior at SUNY-Buffalo at the time and had just finished teaching Transcendental Meditation to about a dozen people that Saturday in my home. I was all alone in the house – my roommates were kind enough to have vacated our place for the day so I could teach without disturbance and in total peace.

I had just finished my early evening meditation and was resting on my bed. Then, all of a sudden, I heard these incredibly peaceful bells, playing the most beautiful music I had ever heard. I looked around to see where the music might be coming from. It certainly wasn’t coming from anywhere in the house because nobody else was home.

I looked out the bedroom window. Nothing. Then the living room window. Nothing. And ditto with every window in the house. So I went back to my bed, and the music continued… the most unbelievably delicate sounds I had ever heard. It was like nothing else I had ever heard on earth. Not like any instrument in the orchestra I’ve ever seen, not like any instrument in any world music tradition I’ve ever heard. It was not of our world. It was of a celestial one.

I love many kinds of bells, from church bells and altar bells to cowbells and chimes. I even have a recording of European church bells chiming.

I do, however, take a pass on hotel bells, bicycle bells, and school bells. But these bells that I heard were not like any of these.

I wish I could somehow duplicate the sound of that music or convey it better than I have. But alas, I would have to be an angel to do that. And even though many people have called me an angel at different times in my life, the bare facts are that I am a person, a very human being. Just one who happened to hear the music that angels make when the atmosphere is very peaceful, what the yogis call sattva, or purity. Or perhaps it’s a music the angels make all the time, but we’re too busy and too noisy to hear it.

It was such beautiful music I would love to hear it again. But it’s not something one can duplicate by saying, “Alexa… play me some angel music.” When you’re given the privilege of hearing something from such a high vibration, it’s an act of grace. In a very different way, it’s like being in the Zone – you can’t force it or will it, you can only be receptive to experience it.

I suspect that we can create the initial conditions and see if the angels respond. It’s like when you go to sleep at night, and you create the initial conditions by lying down in bed, turning off the lights, and putting your head on the pillow, the rest – literally the rest that we call sleep – happens of its own accord. That transition from waking to sleeping is powered by the Higher Power, a power even higher than the angels. The Power that the angels serve.

So to create the initial condition that enabled me to hear the angel’s music, I would need to develop an atmosphere of great sattva. I’ve done that many times on the many occasions that I have taught meditation to many people. But the music didn’t play. Or if it did, I didn’t hear it. I sense that one day I’ll hear that celestial music again. In the meantime, I’m comforted to know that the angels’ bells tolled for me.
