A Daring Daylight Rescue

By Susan Hargreaves Author-Activist-Educator of BEanAnimalHero.org
The phone really never stops ringing with people asking for help with animal situations. One such caller was describing the lengths she had gone to try and get help for a cat and a dog who were in an apartment on the 11th floor. The building residents witnessed all manner of abuse, which I won’t go into here, for you, the readers’ sake. The person who called lived in the apartment below. The authorities were called, and the response was that there was no proof to justify them actually doing something, as this was back in the day before everyone always had a camera at hand. Multiple people described to me and to local animal control officers and police what they witnessed.

Climbing up from the 10 th floor balcony to the 11 th was out, a bit too dangerous. I realized this was going to take a team of fearless women who were not above breaking the law for animal liberation.

When we arrived, we witnessed a kitten being dangled by its arms over the 11 th floor balcony.

The getaway driver had carriers, blankets and waited right by the apartment building’s front door. Another held the elevator door open, while a person in a blue uniform and her helper knocked at the door. When the door was opened, in went the woman in uniform, proclaiming, “We are confiscating the animals being abused in front of many witnesses!” In no time, the kitten and the small dog were in the arms of their saviors in the hallway. After a quickpaced exit, with many witnesses outside seeing the dog and cat rescue, off we drove.

A vet visit confirmed the rescued animals’ previous bone breaks and injuries aligning with reports. The rescue incident was reported to the police by the previous owner of the abused animals, yet no one saw anything when questioned. Happy, forever caring homes were found, and this rescue joined the litany of others, while the law left behind animals being abused. If you see any animal abuse you can try reporting it to the police, first….

Note: The names in this story have been changed to protect the not so innocent (however they are kind!)
