A Celebration of All Types of Moms

By Michelle Hays

Motherhood is one of the most universal experiences in the world, yet we don’t usually consider that being a mother comes in many forms. All moms have one thing in common. They experience struggles and triumphs. Every mother’s journey is simply unique. This month, we are highlighting the extraordinary ways moms make a difference. Biological mothers, stepmoms, single mothers, grandmothers, adoptive moms and the “motherly” all have stories worth celebrating!

The traditional idea of motherhood often centers around biological mothers who bring new life into the world. Being a biological mother is so much more than just giving birth to a child; it’s about raising them, shaping them, teaching them, and guiding them through life. Biological mothers provide emotional support, discipline, and unconditional love. These moms help shape the next generation’s values, passing on wisdom that is carried forward for years to come.

Being a mother is difficult in and of itself, but the challenges can be even more daunting for single mothers. Single moms juggle work, childcare, and the daily responsibilities of running a household with little to no support system, and that requires immense strength, resilience, and perseverance. I was a single mom of two after getting divorced when my son was only four months old, and my daughter was just three. Even though their dad paid child support and was present in their lives, I often felt like I was running against the wind. But in the end, everything was worthwhile.

As single moms, we work tirelessly to ensure our kids have everything they need. Some single moms are often the sole providers and caretakers, giving 100 percent of themselves to their children while managing all the emotional and financial stresses that can come with not having a partner. Their resilience is nothing short of remarkable.

Stepmothers often face another unique set of challenges as they navigate new family dynamics. Stepmoms don’t always have an immediate connection with their stepchildren. For stepmoms, love usually grows over time. Building relationships as a stepmom can be slow and sometimes difficult. However, stepmoms bring something just as powerful to the table: a willingness to love and care for children who are not biologically theirs. I know many stepmoms who are very motherly, and many of them have shared similar experiences with me. At first, it was tough. There were times when they felt like an outsider. But over time, they learned to love their stepchildren in their own way, and their stepchildren began to trust them. Stepmoms open their hearts, and offer support, guidance, and unconditional love while balancing their role as outsiders trying to find their place. While their journey may be complex, their contributions to their stepchildren’s lives are invaluable.

Grandmothers have always held a special place in the family unit. They are the pillars of wisdom! Grandmothers offer something extra special.

As the matriarchs of families, they often babysit their grandchildren, they offer advice, and often offer comfort, support and love to all members of the family. Grandmothers make an indelible mark on their family’s history. Grandmothers help bridge generational gaps, keeping traditions and values alive. Grandmothers demonstrate that love only expands with time.

Adoption is another beautiful form of motherhood. Adoptive mothers are remarkable! Their hearts hold a love that knows no boundaries. They embrace the role of motherhood with a heart that is wide open to all the ups and downs of parenting. They take responsibility for children, often from places of uncertainty or hardship, and offer them a safe, loving home. The love between an adoptive mother and child can be just as strong as any biological relationship. A mom who adopts a child shares a love that is rooted in trust, care, and devotion. They love with abandon, care with purpose, and dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to nurturing their children, regardless of where they come from.

Foster mothers are essential in providing needy children with a safe and loving environment. Many of these children come from difficult backgrounds, and foster moms open their hearts and homes to give them a second chance for a better future. Foster mothers are the unsung heroes of the maternal world. Their role is pivotal in helping heal the emotional scars of these children and giving them a fresh start.

A single story does not define motherhood. It is an ever-evolving experience that touches all kinds of women in all walks of life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day this year, let us celebrate all moms and the motherly, whether biological, adoptive, step, single or grand; all moms deserve to be honored for the love, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment they offer. The faces of motherhood may differ, but the heart of it remains the same: love without limits.
