Now, as we embark on resolutions, goals, manifestations, mantras and plans for the year, consider your home as a SANCTUARY, a TEMPLE for YOU and YOURS. A place of refuge, celebration, love and delicious meals. Your home IS a SANCTUARY, why not treat it like one??
How to get your home of “stuff” looking, smelling and feeling great:
Step 1. Make time to declutter and organize your stuff.
Step 2. Pick a partner to help you (with trash, donations, suggestions).
Step 3. Designate at least three hours for a decluttering session.
Step 4. Start simply. Your garage may be screaming for attention, but build success and momentum by tackling a less-cluttered area (like a laundry room, junk drawer, home office).
Step 5. Use my double bag method.
Black bags for garbage, white bags for donations.
Step 6. Pick your spot and stay with it for the 3-hour session.
Step 7. Say you begin with a guest bathroom – start by clearing everything off the counter tops.
Step 8. Clean and sparkle the counter tops – make them glow for your new SANCTUARY style.
Step 9. DELIBERATELY (on purpose) place ONLY the absolutely necessary countertop items.
Step 10. Use cabinet drawers and under-sink areas for bulky and less often used items.
Step 11. Discard Glade, Febreze and Airwick fragrances (they are neurotoxins). Use organic sprays, soy/beeswax candles and fresh flowers to fill your space with clean and healthy aromas. An orchid does well in bathrooms too.
Step 12. Remove items from hooks and door handles, and see if they can reside elsewhere.
Step 13. Donate unused, unwanted or slightly used stuff you no longer need.
Step 14. Once the mirrors are shined, the toilet area sanitized and bathtub/shower cleaned, you are on your way to total home “domination” – you got this!!!
Similarly, select other smaller and “doable” areas to get your mojo going. Bedroom nightstand drawers, a kitchen pantry, kids’ rooms, closets, and THEN attempt the garage!!
