Living a Healthy Lifestyle… It’s More Than You Think

By Michelle Hays

If I asked you what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, what would you say? Most of us would probably answer the same way: eat clean, exercise more, and drink more water. And yes… those things do matter.

But I’ve learned something over the years, both in my life and in the lives of the couples I work with. You can be physically healthy… and still feel exhausted. You can eat all the right foods… and still feel disconnected. You can check all the boxes… and still feel like something is missing. Because health is so much bigger than what we eat or how often we work out. It’s how we live.

I remember a time in my life when, on the outside, everything looked amazing. My friends used to say, “I wish I had your life.” But the truth was that on the inside, I felt overwhelmed, disconnected, and honestly… a little lost. Things only began to shift when I started paying more attention. Not just to what I was “doing”… but how I was living.

There are so many ways we can support our well-being that have nothing to do with a gym or a meal plan. We can nurture our relationships. I don’t mean perfect relationships, but real ones. The kind where we feel seen, heard and valued. The kind where we can laugh, be ourselves, and even work through the hard moments together. We can also be intentional about creating new connections. A conversation, a shared experience, even a simple “how are you?” can connect us in ways we didn’t even know we needed.

And love… real, lasting love… is one of the most powerful contributors to a healthy life. Not just the feeling of love, but the daily experience of it. Feeling supported. Feeling safe. Feeling like you matter to someone, and they matter to you. Love has the ability to calm our nervous system, to bring meaning to our lives, and to remind us that we are not doing this life alone. But love doesn’t just happen… it’s something we nurture through attention, presence and care.

One of the healthiest things we can do is learning how to slow down! When I start feeling out of sorts, that´s where I start. Try it. Whether that´s meditation, quiet reflection, or simply sitting without distraction for a few minutes. In a world that constantly pulls our attention outward, there is something incredibly powerful about coming back inward.

We can also feed our minds in ways that expand us. Not just scrolling through information, but by learning something new. Reading, listening, exploring ideas that challenge us or inspire us. There is a kind of energy that comes from curiosity. It keeps us growing.

And then there´s something we often forget as adults ... play. We think play is for children, but I don´t believe that´s true. Play is for anyone who wants to feel joy again. It might look like having a pillow fight when you are mad, trying something new just for fun, laughing until you cry, or being a little silly, without worrying about how you´re perceived. Playfulness softens life. It reminds us that not everything has to be serious. And lastly… nature. There is something grounding about stepping outside, feeling the sun, hearing the birds, watching the ocean, or simply noticing the world around you. Nature has a quiet way of bringing us back to ourselves.

Sure, taking care of our physical body matters. Nourishing ourselves with foods that give us energy. Moving our bodies in ways that feel good. But when we look at all of this together, one thing becomes clear. Living a healthy lifestyle isn´t about doing everything perfectly. It´s about living intentionally. It´s about asking ourselves: What will help me feel more alive today? What will bring me peace, connection or joy?

Sometimes it´s a walk. Sometimes it´s a meaningful conversation. Sometimes it´s five quiet minutes to breathe. Sometimes it´s choosing to see the good in our spouse. Sometimes it´s choosing to turn toward the people we love ... even when life feels busy or hard.

There really are so many things we can do. And the beauty is ... we don´t have to do them all. We just have to start somewhere. Because a healthy life isn´t built in one big decision. It´s built in small, meaningful choices ... made over and over again. And those choices don´t just shape how we live ... they shape how we feel while we´re living.

Because at the end of the day, a truly healthy life isn´t just measured by how we look or what we accomplish ... but by how deeply we are able to connect, to feel, and to love.
