There is comfort in believing life will unfold the way we planned it. We sketch out futures in neat lines, trusting that if we follow the path carefully enough, we´ll arrive exactly where we intended to be.

Last June, I retired. On that day, I set a goal for myseIf: to write a book in one year. It felt bold but reasonable. I had the time, the discipline, and a story I believed in. I imagined myself, 12 months later, finished manuscript in hand, stepping into the next chapter exactly as planned.

This month marks that one-year anniversaiy. I am not holding a finished manuscript.

But as Conan O´Brien once said, "Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you are kind, amazing things will happen." I´m still waiting for the amazing part, but, ever the optimist, I keep looking at the bright side.

Who among us hasn´t clung to a carefully imagined version of how things should be? The most meaningful parts of our lives rarely come from those tidy expectations. They come from the detours.

The job we didn´t get that led us somewhere better. The closed door that nudged us toward a different, more fulfilling path. The unexpected conversation, the chance encounter, the quiet shift in direction that, at the time, felt like uncertainty, but in hindsight, looks more like guidance.

Life has a way of rearranging our plans, not to disappoint us, but to expand us. Of course, some curveballs are more difficult than others, but disappointments come in all sizes. It takes patience to release what we thought we wanted. It takes courage to keep moving forward when the path feels unclear.

That´s where the second half of O´Brien´s words becomes so important: if you work really hard and you´re kind, amazing things will happen.

Hard work and kindness are not always glamorous. They don´t guarantee immediate results or recognition. They often happen quietly, in the background of our lives. But these are the seeds of something extraordinaiy.

A new opportunity that feels more like home. A relationship that arrives when we least expect it. A sense of purpose that grows slowly, almost imperceptibly, until one day we realize we are exactly where we need to be.

Reframing disappointment is not about pretending things turned out the way we hoped. It´s about recognizing that something valuable is still unfolding, even when it looks different than we expected.

I did not finish my book in a year. But I did not give up on it either. And maybe that matters more.
