Here´s the A Clutter Clearing top 10 hacks for you to utilize. Simple, quick and effective. Which ones are you going to implement today? Counting down ...
10. Throw away junk mail - You know what it looks like ... postcard advertising, coupon-clipping magazines, election flyers and cards ... read it or toss it, but DO NOT SAVE IT.
9. Wash your dishes and clean your sink daily - Nothing gets junkier than a sink filled with dirty dishes. Well ... you can handle this. Wash by hand or load the dishwasher, but either way, pledge to keep the sink empty each day before bedtime.
8. Make a place by your front door where you can hang your keys and glasses - Whether it´s a shelf, a dish, a hanging hook rack, or something else, no need to waste time every day hunting for keys, glasses, phones and such. Make it a habit.
7. Clear your countertops in the kitchen - You know you want to have a clean and clear home, so why not start with the kitchen counters? Clear them of seldom used appliances, utensils, notes, signs, recipes, and find cupboard space for these things. What to keep on the counter? The coffee maker, blender, a toaster oven. You know, daily use items. Everything else? Find a home in a drawer, a shelf, a pantry, or underneath the counter.
6. Clear your bathroom countertops - Same as #7. Remove everything. Clear and clean the surface. Then, place only the daily needed items on the bathroom counter. I´m thinking toothbrush, toothpaste, hairdryer and soap products. Do your best to keep it clear of extra things like cosmetics, brushes, combs and such. Maybe a Q-tip holder is fine.
5. Books, books, books - We have them, we love them, and we rarely go back to read them a second time. So why are we displaying them for years? The answer is, no one told us what to do with them, so we keep them, showing our visitors how well read we are! You want more room in your home? Go through your books and purge and donate unneeded and unwanted titles. Someone else will surely appreciate them.
4. Bedroom do´s and don´ts - Other than one or two book titles, the bedroom should not house your library. Why? Books are cerebral. We read to learn, think, entertain, using our brain. The bedroom is a place for emotion, tranquility, romance and less thinking, more loving. Makes sense doesn´t it? Also, while we love mirrors, best to not have them reflect your bed and its occupants for fear of self-conscious gawking. In Las Vegas, sure. But a home bedroom for serenity and calm, not so much.
3. Those storage container lid mismatches - We all have them. Our supply of plastic, glass or metal food storage containers. We have lids, we have bottoms. It´s a great way to review your inventory, by matching them together. Anything not match or mismatch? Consider donating or tossing out altogether.
2. Clean out your car - Clutter happens everywhere there´s space! Your car is your mobile home. It deserves some TLC too. Whether it´s old wrappers, drink containers, old supplies or dirty items, take 30 minutes a week and clear up the mess. It´s fast, easy, safe and effective!
1. Old papers - Perhaps the most time-consuming item on my Top 10. Clearing old papers, shredding old documents, going through the mail, magazines and such is an ongoing assignment. Not holding onto them in the first place is a good practice. Having a workable filing system and desk drawers is another good idea. Purging those old, tired magazines from the bathroom mag rack is also purposeful. It takes some decision making, some organizational tools, and a desire to get in front of the clutter, not be at its effect.
That’s my top 10.. .there’s more, and we have ideas, solutions and ways to help rid you of clutter once and for all. Stay tuned next month when we offer more helpful hacks for you and your cherished home.
