California Energy Commission (CEC) has approved the first in the nation energy efficiency tires. According to the CEC, this will save Californians billions in fuel cost, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. This makes California the first state to mandate that replacement tires be energy efficient.
This new law is in line with Michelin´s all-sustainable and holistic approach for reducing the impact of tires at every stage of the life cycle without compromising safety and other performances that are important to consumers,” said Francesca Mosteller, Director of State and Local Government Affairs, Michelin North America.
Not everyone is on board with these findings. Many industry groups and manufacturers object to the regulations. This could raise a set of tires’ cost in the hundreds, and outweigh the savings reported by the CEC.
Is this massive regulatory outreach? Will other states follow? Time will tell.
Happy Motoring.
