A Procrastination Meditation

By Cary Bayer
In this column, we’ll do things a little differently, and get some insights that can help you overcome procrastination. After having taught my “How to Overcome Procrastination Now” workshop for many years to many hundreds of people, it’s pretty clear to me that a majority of Americans procrastinate at least one thing in their lives. For many it’s delaying looking at and taking care of paperwork; for many others it’s not going through those boxes in the closet or attic; for still others it’s returning phone calls or emails; still other put off house cleaning; others put off starting projects; still others wait until the tomorrow that never comes to balance their checkbooks, pay their taxes, or read their mail. You get the idea… procrastination is a kind of pandemic that affects not only the procrastinator, but many of those close to him who care about him and who rely on his promptness.

So, instead of just talking about overcoming procrastination, I’ll give you a chance here to do a kind of meditation on it. Let’s begin by taking a deep breath in. On this inhale imagine yourself up to date on all the things that you procrastinate. And feel how good that feels to be at peace with your responsibilities. On the exhalation, let go of all your troubles and worries about procrastinating. Feel the calmness, the peace, and the mental silence. On the next inhale, feel your power, creativity, energy, and connection to Spirit. Remember that you are a spark of the divine.

You’re well aware of what your date book looks like and how you procrastinate. Now, let’s take a look at what a week in the life of the Divine looks like. We’ll look at an old week from a long time ago. You’ll forgive the expression, “a long time ago,” because the week we’ll examine was from before the advent of time itself. But you get the idea.

This is the same Higher Power who, by the way, breathes your every breath for you, beats the heart in your chest, and digests your food for you. All the while doing the same for every living creature in the universe, as well. This is an Intelligence, who gets things done. This is an extraordinarily efficient and quiet Being at that, doing all this without even so much as taking credit, taking a bow, or leaving a business card. You thought that the Lone Ranger liked to remain anonymous for doing good deeds; Spirit does all this and much, much more without even sending a bill or asking for thanks.

So, without any further ado…the date book of the Higher Power.

Sunday: Create light. Separate light from the darkness.

Monday: Create a firmament in the midst of the waters. Divide the waters from the waters. Call the firmament heaven.

Tuesday: Create dry land. Gather together the waters and seas. Create herb-yielding seeds. Make some trees, which bear fruit.

Wednesday: Make some lights in the firmament. Call them the sun, the moon, and the stars.

Thursday: Put plenty of fish in the seas. Design some birds to fly through the sky.

Friday: Create some cattle on the land. Design some beasts as well. Breathe life into man. Make woman, too.

Saturday: Enjoy your Creation.

Take the day off.

This is how the Divine gets things done. You can, too, because you are a part of the divine. Now see yourself functioning like this:

Going through your paperwork quickly; Paying your bills on time; Sorting through all those boxes; Washing the dishes, and doing the laundry.

See how good that feels, how much more energy you have.

Now open your eyes, and vow to become productive and efficient like your Creator.
