The S.M.A.R.T System

By David Hall

As an avid home organizer, declutterer and designer, I am delighted to present my latest system for designing and decluttering your home.

With pleasure, I present:

The S.M.A.R.T.

System Simple and easy to execute

The S.M.A.R.T System

S. Simply Start, and Start Simply

– When contemplating clearing clutter, first choose an easy area – you want to succeed, so go easy in the beginning. It may be a junk drawer in the kitchen, a top drawer in your home office, or just one shelf in your laundry room. The key is to START, take the step, and take that step in a simple area.

M. Mindset

– Having an attitude of gratitude is preferable.

For a good attitude, I recommend you set the tone for a successful decluttering session.

1. Play music you love.

2. Prepare a beverage of choice.

3. Wear comfortable clothes with protective footgear.

A. Action

– Sitting around and procrastinating stifles action. Getting up, focusing on one simple area first is the key. Once you start, you’ll experience action and excitement. Bring in an empty trash bin, cleaning spray and cloths, and a broom or vacuum.

R. Renew, Reuse, Recycle

– Once you take action, you’ll find a need to decide what to do with your “stuff.” By finding, for example, clothes you haven’t seen in a while in your overcrowded closet, you will discover a renewal of interest, style and options for wearing your newly found belongings. Reuse these items with excitement, and recycle items you no longer care for, by donating to a charity. Your donated things bring joy and renewal to those in need. It’s a win-win formula to purge your unwanted items: give them away, and make room for new shopping opportunities.

T. Transformation

– Upon clearing out a drawer, a shelf, a closet section, you’ll experience a feeling of well-being, of transformation. Letting go is, in fact, freeing yourself from things that no longer serve you. By letting go of unwanted baggage, you simply lighten your load. The transformation that occurs will put you in a wonderful mood. When the mood subsides, guess what? Start the S.M.A.R.T. system on another drawer, shelf or closet space, and get that fresh, free feeling again!!

The S.M.A.R.T. system to organizing was designed to be easy to follow, easy to execute, and easy to maintain. Once you’ve committed to taking the time to do it, clearing clutter can be most satisfying, resulting in creating new habits with an attitude of gratitude – providing you more time to pursue other areas of interests.
