A Whole New Year!

By David Hall
It’s a whole new year, 2022!! Let’s make it one of purpose, people and possibility.

Peace is a worthwhile goal, and so is climate change action – looking at what we can do to take individual responsibility.

When it comes to decluttering and getting organized for the New Year, I recommend taking a good hard look at your surroundings. What’s working? What’s not working in your home?

If you’re finding your home environment is a bit messy, a bit out of order, or just in need of freshening up, we can offer you some guidelines. If, after the holiday hustle and bustle, your home is more of a “disaster area” than just unkempt, we can offer solutions.

Clutter and chaos negatively impact our psyche. With clutter and chaos surrounding us in our homes, we are distracted, loathsome, and we find ourselves out of control. We find ourselves “trying” to correct the problem, only to fall back into bad habits, procrastination, and/or indecision.

Have no fear… help is on the way. Here’s my S.M.A.R.T. system to selforganize and declutter once and for all.

By adopting my method, you’ll soon be able to find the bottom of that pile of papers, the floor beneath the mountains of laundry, the garage that holds cars (not just rubbish and leftover floor tiles and wood planks).

Let’s begin…S tands for Start simply and simply start. Work on a smaller area of the home. Say a bedroom nightstand drawer. Empty the contents and begin to purposefully place items in that drawer. Eliminate the extra pens, paperclips, Q-tips and other items. S tands for start simply. So select your first project based on simplicity.

M stands for Mindset. Decluttering can be rewarding and less of a drudgery than you might think. To assure your success, have your mind set properly. I recommend putting on enjoyable music, getting a favorite beverage in hand, and wearing comfortable clothing.

A stands for Action. Sooner or later you actually have to do something to affect change in your chaos. First, get some big trash bags. Black for discarding junk, white for donations… this way you’ll be set for making bold decisions. Remember that action will result in letting go of things that no longer serve you. Have on hand, too, a broom, cleaning spray and some rags or paper towels.

R stands for Repurpose, reuse, recycle. When we choose to rid ourselves of things we have too much of, or items that are out of date, we can repurpose them in the white bags and have a charity pick up your items at home, or drop them off for others to enjoy your unwanted things. You’ll feel better making a societal contribution, while making room for new, more desirable things in your home. There’s a tax deduction benefit too, where allowed by law.

T. T is the big outcome. T in the S.M.A.R.T. system stands for Transformation. That’s right, transformation. You will literally feel lighter, more buoyant, full of possibilities, and want to take on bigger, more pressing jobs or projects once you’ve “lightened your load.”

New Year, new you, and new resolutions. Make one of those resolutions a commitment to clear the clutter… to clear the mind. Use my S.M.A.R.T. system for a proven method to declutter and get organized. Remember, do it now. Don’t wait. Procrastination and indecision are the key factors that cause the clutter to begin with.
