Rules and Laws for Drones?

By Teresa Aquila
Have you ever wondered what the laws or rules are for drones? It seems these pesky craft are gaining ground over neighborhoods and on the streets. The Operations Over People rule was effective as of April 21, 2021. Drone pilots can now operate at night, over people and over moving vehicles without a waiver, as long as they meet the requirements defined in the rule. The Rule is Part 107. Airspace authorizations are still required for night operations in controlled airspace under 400 feet. So can a drone trespass on your property? This gets tricky. The FAA does not regulate drones, but they do give new meaning to the idea of a snoopy neighbor. If a crime is being committed and a drone captures it, this can be turned over to law enforcement to request a warrant to search your property. Check with your local police for laws pertaining to drones. Happy Motoring.
