Summertime Clearing

By David Hall
Summertime… and the living is easy… fish are jumpin’… and the cotton is high...

Welcome to the WOOF! Dog Days of Summer.

Here in SoFLo, keep that A/C cranked up and be sure to put on that sun protection… baby it’s HOT outside.

But inside, another story. Time to take matters into your own hands.

Ask yourself, “Where are the most cluttered spaces in my home?”

Survey says:

1. Garage

2. Second Bedroom

3. Closets

4. Kitchen

5. Master Bedroom

6. Florida Room

7. Laundry Area

8. Pantry

9. Other

So where’s your most challenging area?

Want to clear the clutter to clear the mind? (Sure, why not?) What’s it going to take?

CLUTTER CLEARING takes some work, a mindset, some time and a desire to rid yourself of unnecessary stuff and distractions.

Distractions? Well, yes, we easily get distracted from piles that are out of control and ever-expanding…. Piles of laundry, old magazines, filing papers, mail, old photos and the like. Why is it a distraction? Because every time you glance at these “problem areas” you remind yourself to clear the clutter… and then something else captures your attention. So, time after time, day after day, these unfinished piles get on your nerves, sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously.

Either way… to move on to truly more pressing matters, clearing the clutter will FREE YOU FROM the DRUDGERY of these piles in progress, leaving you more free, more upbeat and in greater control.

Two things keep us from this task of organizing, putting things away, making sense of TMS (too much stuff), and clearing the clutter. They are:

1. PROCRASTINATION – We all do it, and well, if you want to have a home you feel GOOD about, procrastination is keeping that FEEL GOOD FEELING at bay.

2. INDECISION – When we get stymied, at a loss, too busy to think clearly, we run into indecision. Coupled with procrastination, indecision lets the piles be piles, lets the laundry stay in the hamper, keeps those files from getting tossed or shredded.

Overcoming these two mighty forces takes time, courage and usually some outside intervention. Not always is a spouse your best supporter. They may be frustrated, busy, short-fused or unhelpful in any number of ways. Important: never point the finger… handle your home zone first before blaming your spouse for their lack of order.

BRING IN A PRO – To jumpstart any home organizing, decorating, or clutter clearing project, bringing in a third party helps ease the burden. We get the job done, WITHOUT SHAME, BLAME or PAIN. We work WITH you to help make decisions about what to keep, repurpose, donate or discard. We help you prioritize systems that work long after we are done. The PRO can help clear the clutter faster, with lasting results, and in our case, with a cheerful, playful and meaningful process.

So, in this time of heat, humidity and healing time (needed a third H word…) take on your cluttered projects. Remember… it took some time to get your clutter to this level, so be good to yourself and take the process in steps.
